Twin Garage Door Centre Post Removal Options

Twin garage door property

A double garage is a great feature for your property. That large space is perfect for storage, minor mechanical tinkering and sheltering your motor vehicles. In some cases however, a twin door frontage may not be the ideal solution. Especially if you are driving a larger vehicle and you’ve had a few close scrapes with that central brick column.

Removing the Column

One option, of course, is to remove that centre post. This is probably not something you should undertake yourself unless you are a structural engineer. But provided the beam or lintel holding the garage up is properly supported in other ways the central pillar can be removed and the twin doors replaced with a single wider opening.

Alternative Solution

If it’s just a few extra inches you require to make parking a little easier, you may not need to remove the column at all. Replacing older framed doors with modern sectional garage doors which don’t unnecessarily narrow the entranceway may be a sufficient increase in space. In many cases, this is a solution that could potentially save you hundreds of pounds compared with a restructuring of the garage entrance.
