Find Us!Not all garage door entrances were created equally. Last month we looked at double garage doors with a pillar to support extra wide entrances. For this latest post, we thought we’d look at some narrow garage door entrance solutions.
We find that new build properties often include a small garage as a popular feature, and sometimes we wonder what the original developer was thinking - especially when an already narrow entrance is made narrower still by fitting the garage doors between instead of behind the supporting piers.
If you own one of these garages and the time has come to look at replacing the garage doors, it is well worth speaking to a professional garage door fitter to make sure that no option goes unexplored for creating extra drive through width.
Take the example of people who have up-and-over garage doors fitted within a 7ft opening. Unfortunately, the 3 inch sub frame that is fitted around 3 sides of these doors actually decreases the drive through width of your door to just 6ft 6 inches. That’s not much wiggle room for a widish car like an Audi A3 (5ft 11 including the mirrors!). Even a Ford Fiesta or a modern Mini measure 5ft 8 on the tape.
Rather than purchasing a new car there are several cheaper alternatives available. Our advice would be to consider replacing your up-and-over door with either a roller or sectional garage door. Fitted behind the opening rather than between the piers, there is no need for the sub frame so you can increase the drive through space by 6 inches to the full 7ft.
