Find Us!The biggest factor affecting the longevity of electric garage doors is accidental damage. A high quality door that is properly maintained and - crucially - not involved in a low speed collision with a vehicle should last upwards of 20 years. Here are a few things you can do to ensure that your new garage doors are looking as good in 10 years’ time as when they were first installed.
1, Choose a high quality door
By opting for the cheapest doors, you are setting yourself up to be disappointed. By making a slightly larger investment at the start, your garage doors will have parts and materials that meet higher specifications. We can advise on what features it is worth spending more on - depending on your particular circumstances.
2. Maintain your door's workings
Make an occasional visual inspection of the springs, rollers, hinges, and tracks. Remove any debris that has worked its way in (sawdust and autumn leaves are the usual culprits) and lubricate with WD40.
3. Check for rust
If your door is made of steel, wipe away any grime from the surface of the door and check for rust. If you suspect a patch of rust is starting to develop and you catch it early, you can simply sand away the corroded metal and repaint.
4. Listen to your door
If you hear any unusual sounds when your door is opening and closing, get it checked out. New creaking sounds may be an indication that the door is not functioning optimally and it will be cheaper to get it sorted before the door fails completely.
5. Drive carefully
We can’t reiterate this enough. Take great care when manoeuvring a vehicle near your garage doors. Of all the various harms minor and major that could befall your new door, vehicle damage is the factor most likely to be irreparable, and most within your control to avoid.
