Garage Door Maintenance Checklist

English house and garage door

Some simple garage door maintenance tasks can easily be completed by yourself and more complex ones by a technician at Auto Doors. Routine checks will increase the longevity of your garage doors and ensure you don’t miss out an insurance claim due to failing to secure your premises adequately. This week we offer you a handy checklist with a few simple maintenance tips that will help ensure your building is protected against burglary and environmental damage.

✅ To avoid injury make sure to warn everyone in your home that you will be carrying out some checks in the garage. This way everyone will be aware to keep clear whilst the doors are opening and closing.

✅ Stop, look and listen. Observe the doors from the inside whilst they are closed. Cast your eye over any springs, pulleys or hinges for signs of wear or damage. Do you observe rust, frayed cables or hardware that appears loose? Open and close the doors and listen out for a grinding or scraping noise. If you have any doubts, it’s time to ask a technician to take a look.

✅ Once or twice a year, you should apply a small amount of silicon or Teflon-based lubricant spray to the hinges, rollers and tracks. Check the lubricant you are using is suitable for garage door application.

✅  Wash the door surfaces and windows gently using car-wash soap or washing-up liquid. Rinse down thoroughly avoiding too much pressure.

✅  Ask a technician to undertake a door balance test by disabling the automatic opening mechanism and checking that the door opens manually in one smooth motion, without resistance. The door should remain fully open. If the door is difficult to open or begins to close of its own accord, it may be out of balance.

✅ Finally, remember never undertake any D.I.Y. repairs to your garage doors without seeking advice from a professional first as tinkering with cables or other parts of your doors could cause a serious injury to yourself or another.
