Find Us!Doors are a mainstay of the horror movie genre. Vampires famously cannot cross a threshold without invitation. Dimensions containing unspeakable horrors are often hidden behind innocent looking doors. An added bonus for the lazy director is that an inexplicable door slamming is a good way to make an audience jump.
The Shining
Safe to say, if you are suffering from writer’s block, the worst thing you can do is lock yourself and your family away in a haunted hotel for the winter. It might start well, but before you know it the lift will be full of blood, creepy twin girls pop up everywhere you look and you might well end up taking an axe to the timber door that your family is cowering behind. All work and no play makes Jack Nicholson an axe-wielding maniac. The door never stood a chance.
The Exorcist
A similarly poor choice of door is evident in The Exorcist. Regan, the girl possessed by the Devil spends the whole film in her bedroom spewing great quantities of green vomit at the wall and spinning her head at unnatural angles. The two priests are in there with her performing the exorcism. Her family wait in the hallway. The door to the bedroom is put through its paces by the evil mystical forces within, slamming several times before eventually splitting open.
The Silence of the Lambs
Clarice Starling’s interviews with Hannibal Lecter take place through the transparent door to his cell. To reach him she has to pass through a maze of hallways and many locked doors. These doors are a literal representation of the level of security under which the dangerous prisoner is kept, but also a metaphorical representation of the dangers of the mind of the serial killer.
Sometimes even a family friendly movie will feature something scary behind the door...
