Taking a good hard look at yourself is usual in January. The excesses of the previous month can inspire you to get some exercise and eat properly. It is also a good time to take a look at your surroundings – what can be done to improve your home? One area that might need attention is your door. Do either of these stories sound familiar?
Garage Door
Well perhaps you shouldn’t have lent him your car, but he’d not long passed his test and you’d paid to put him on the insurance. At least he admitted it. He’d reversed onto your sloping driveway so neatly. He’d avoided the gateposts and the planters. If only he had put the handbrake on he wouldn’t have put that dent in your garage door.
Front Door
You can get strangely used to the little foibles of a house: the dripping tap, the shelves stacked on the floor in the spare room that you never got around to putting up, the front door that sticks. It used to occur only in damp weather, the old timber door would swell up and stick, just a little bit. Fast forward to the present day and you're used to putting your shoulder against it to give the door a helpful extra nudge. You tell the kids not to slam it, but actually there’s no other way to shut it. Alright, time for a bit of DIY. You get your Grandad’s carpenter’s plane out of the shed and shave away at the timbers. The door closes without catching for the first time in years. You feel the satisfaction of a job well done and await the congratulation of your family. Only now, everybody is complaining about the draught. Face it – it is time for a new door.
