Find Us!Since 2001, the average width of a car in the UK has increased by one centimetre every two years. As people opt for bigger and bigger cars, some drivers inevitably start to wonder if they are going to need a wider garage entrance if they still want to park their car out of the rain!
We occasionally get contacted by people who are looking into structural work to widen their garage door. We’ve been asked about the possibility of removing the central pillar of twin garage doors and replacing them with a single entrance. Enquiries have also been made about the feasibility of moving the structural piers on either side of the entrance further apart. These options can be pursued, but will involve contracting a builder to undertake the structural alterations prior to the installation of your new wider garage door..
There is a solution however that adds a few crucial centimetres width to your garage entranceway, and involves no structural changes to the brickwork of your garage. This solution can be conducted by your garage door installers without calling in the services of a builder.
For the installation of all of our garage doors, there is the option to install the frame behind rather than between the piers, thus increasing the opening width to allow modern cars to fit through more easily. People often haven’t realised that this is a possible solution, and are surprised and delighted at the savings they could potentially make by choosing this way forward.
