Turn your Garage into a Laundry Room

Traditionally, the garage wasn’t the cleanest part of the property. It was a place of rags and engine grease and sawdust-covered workbenches. Shelves had tins of paint and jars of assorted screws and nails. However, a generation has grown up that doesn’t mind admitting that they will never be the handymen their parents were. It’s not entirely their fault - the days when you could fix most problems in a car with a can of lubricant, an adjustable spanner and a Haynes Manual are long gone. 

Garages are looking a lot cleaner as a result. So clean in fact that they are being put to a new use as laundry rooms. Here’s how to turn your garage into one.

1. Deep Clean: Not just a tidy-up – the room needs to be spotless. 
   
2. Appliances: Moving the washing machine out of the kitchen frees up a whole bunch of extra space. Never had room for a tumble dryer in the house?  Not a problem, now that your garage is your laundry room.
   
3. Shelving: A large clean work surface on which to fold your shirts, sheets and duvet covers makes laundry so much easier.
   
4. Music: Having your favourite tunes (or podcast) blasting out makes ironing that little bit less tedious.
   
5. Ventilation: If you are hanging things up to dry in your garage, you must make sure the room is properly ventilated or condensation can form on the walls and lead to a problem with mould. Luckily, garages are easy to ventilate quickly because they have a large door that you can open. Of course, it would be more convenient if you had an automated garage door…
