Keep Damp Out of Your Garage This Winter

Winter can be a tough time for garages. The cold, damp weather can lead to condensation building up inside your garage and this can create a favourable environment for problems such as mould, and mildew, which can damage your belongings and leave a musty smell.

While regular airing should help, it's not always practical in the colder months.

Here are some effective methods to combat dampness in your garage:

  • Improve Airflow. Consider installing vents and extractor fans in the garage walls to draw out damp air and allow fresh air to circulate.
  • Dehumidifiers. Plugged in dehumidifiers are effective at removing moisture from the air and modern ones are generally pretty inexpensive to run. An alternative is to hang up desiccant dehumidification bags that use a drying agent to absorb moisture.
  • Mould-Resistant Paint: Moisture condenses on cold walls and mould and mildew may form black spots on the damp surface. Thoroughly clean and dry afflicted walls then repaint with mould-resistant paint as an effective way to counter this problem.
  • Insulation: A well insulated garage will be a drier, more comfortable space.

New garage door

A key component in creating that dry and comfortable garage environment is a modern insulated garage door. It helps to regulate temperature, reduce heat loss, and prevent moisture buildup. By choosing an insulated garage door, you can significantly reduce the risk of condensation, mould, and mildew.
