It's officially spring which means it's the perfect opportunity to give your house (and garage) a good clean. You may not think so, but your garage can get pretty dirty over time, so there is no harm in giving it a clean before the summer months set in. We have some simple tips and advice on how to clean your garage door.
Cleaning your Garage Door
Cleaning you garage door is pretty straight forward and requires very little equipment. What you'll need is:
- Broom
- Garden hose
- Large bucket
- Mild detergent/washing liquid
- Sponge
- Cloth
Most households already own these items, but they are easy to pick up from your local supermarket or DIY store.
Instructions
- Make sure your garage door is closed
- Begin by brushing the surface with a broom to remove all dirt and debris
- Mix up the detergent and water as instructed and wash the door with a sponge thoroughly
- Rinse off all the soap residue from the garage door by thoroughly spraying the surface of the door with warm water from the hose
- Allow the door to dry and then open it
- Wipe any dust or debris from the door tracks using a cloth or broom
If you come across any tough spots that won't budge you can always try:
- A good quality car wax for an aluminium door. This will help eliminate any spots as well as protecting your door and giving it some added shine.
- For steel doors try an everyday kitchen detergent. Be careful though as some detergents are abrasive, so you may want to test it on a small unnoticeable area of the door first.
If you own a wooden garage door then it's a good idea to clean the outside of the door by wiping it with a dry, soft cloth. After cleaning the door, it may also require repainting or staining. It's advisable to inspect your garage door once a year to determine if it needs to be painted or stained.
