The Simple Answer
The short and simple answer to a Guide to Garage Door Sizes is, there is no standard and it’s a potential minefield! The easy thing to do is give us a call and we’ll pop round to measure up properly. This is a free service we offer, with no obligation – so give us a call on 01603 787069! Our helpful, no pressure team will make sure that we’ve got the correct dimensions and can advise you on which type of garage door is best for the size, location and use of your garage.
What are Standard Garage Door Sizes?
Average garage door sizes have changed over the years to accommodate the growing size of average cars, which means that there isn’t one standard size for single or double garages. Single garage doors can vary between 7 and 10 foot wide, whilst double garages tend to vary between 12 and 16 foot wide. Most garage doors have an opening height of 7 feet, although this also varies.
There isn’t a standard measurement that housebuilders or architects use for garages, and the measurements are often omitted from brochures and floorplans supplied by estate agents. So our advice is to take a tape measure with you to view a property, if you can show that your car wouldn’t fit in the garage you may be able to knock some money off the asking price – which you can then spend on a new space saving garage door!
How Should I Measure My Garage?
The two key measurements you need when looking for a garage door quote are the height and width. Always measure the width from brick to brick, without including frames in your measurement and the height from the floor to the bottom of the lintel. Measuring the maximum size of your garage door, inclusive of the size of any frame already in place, allows us to give you an accurate quote as nearly all garage doors will be installed with a new frame.
