What is a Standard Garage Door Size in the UK?

Garage door prices vary by style, manufacturer and size. You might think that there would be some standard sizes for garage doors in the UK but, even in new builds, there is no standard measurement that housing developers and architects use for garage doors - it's something of a free for all!

Single and double garage door sizes

There really is a huge amount of variation here. It is always best for accuracy to measure in millimetres, but colloquially, most people still talk in feet and inches. Single garage doors can vary between 7 and 10 feet wide, whilst double garages tend to vary between 12 and 16 feet wide. Most garage doors have an opening height of 7 feet, although this can also vary!

How do I know what size garage door to order?

In a situation where you are buying a property and thinking the garage door might need an upgrade, take a tape measure with you to measure the garage door. The two key measurements you need are the height and width. Always measure the width from brick to brick, ignore the frame as this will typically be replaced. Measure the height from the floor to the bottom of the lintel.

Measuring unusually shaped garage doors

For garages that are built on a slope, have an arched opening or any other non “standard” aspects, measure between the widest points and from the floor to the tallest point for a quick quote, or call our showroom to arrange for us to visit you and measure up properly.
